Overview / Furan Resin
The Permaset range of cold setting binders is based on well proven Furan technology
and available in all the popular grades. Urea formaldehyde modified resins in a
range of nitrogen contents from 1.0 - 13.0% or phenolic Furans utilising our phenol
formaldehyde co-polymer expertise. In addition special phenol and nitrogen free
resins or high reactive grades available in our Permacol range.
Range of nitrogen and water contents available
Easy adaptability
Excellent dimensional accuracy
Low sand to metal ratio due to high strength
Unbeatable shake-out
Ease of reclamation - up to 95% even on low cost plant
Good binder stability
Application
Most resins are suitable for use on both new and reclaimed sand ildeally at additions
of 0.8 - 1.4%. Due to the range of nitrogen contants available, the resin can be
chosen, which gives the most metallurgically and economically acceptable system.
Catalyst choice is important because it can significantly affect binder performance.
Strip times are controlled by type, concentration and amount of catalyst used. Addition
rates can vary between 25 - 75% based on resin weight, but optimum levels for both
environment and performance are 25 - 50%. Strip times from 1 minute to more than
120 minutes are achievable by proper catalyst selection and application.
Sand quality and selection can also greatly affect the ultimate performance of any
Furan system. New sand with a neutral pH, low fines and a rounded grain give the
best strength characteristics, although most other silica, zircon or chromite sands
can be used with excellent results. When utilising a reclaimed sand system the following
should be controlled:
Grain size & distribution
fines or oversize particles should be removed and a sieve grading as near to the
new sand as possible maintained.
Loss-on-ignition
this should be as low as possible and ideally below 3%.
Sand temperature
to avoid friable moulds and low strengths temperatures below 30ºC should be maintained.
The ideal range is 20 - 25%.
Eurotek's extensive range of Furan resins can be split into two main ranges as detailed
below ( tables will launch in an external window ):
Launch Table (1 FA / UF Binders )
Launch Table (2 FA / PF and FA / PF / UF Binders )
All binders in table ( 1 ) plus Permaset 841, 843 and 846 can be used in conjunction
with our lower sulphur catalyst range.
This is not an exhaustive list of resins available and the recommendations included
are for general guidance only. Should further advice be required, our Technical
staff are on hand to help with specific application information.
